Lab Test
General WellnessIron, TIBC & Ferritin Panel
About this test
This panel measures three markers that work together to give a complete picture of your body's iron status. It's useful if you're experiencing fatigue, hair loss, heavy periods, or if a previous test showed low hemoglobin.
Iron levels alone can be misleading — this panel looks at how much iron is in your blood, how much carrying capacity you have left, and how much iron is stored in your body. Together, these three numbers help identify whether you're iron-deficient, iron-overloaded, or somewhere in between. Results are best reviewed with a clinician alongside any symptoms you're having.
Components
- Iron: Measures the amount of iron currently circulating in your bloodstream. Levels naturally vary throughout the day and are typically highest in the morning, which is why a morning draw is preferred.
- Total Iron-Binding Capacity (TIBC): Reflects how much transferrin (your blood's iron-transport protein) is available to carry iron. A high TIBC with low iron often points to iron deficiency; a low TIBC may suggest iron overload or a chronic illness.
- Ferritin: Your body's iron storage protein. This is often the earliest marker to drop when iron stores are running low. Low ferritin is closely linked to iron-deficiency anemia; elevated ferritin can reflect iron overload, inflammation, or certain liver conditions.
Who is this test for?
This panel is a good fit for anyone experiencing unexplained fatigue, weakness, hair loss, brittle nails, or heavy menstrual periods. It is also commonly used as a follow-up when a routine blood count shows low hemoglobin or red blood cell counts. Vegetarians, vegans, and frequent blood donors may also benefit from periodic iron status checks.
