About this test

This panel assesses your overall metabolic health by measuring four key risk factors that, when present together, indicate metabolic syndrome — a cluster of conditions that significantly raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. It's appropriate for people with excess abdominal weight, a sedentary lifestyle, high blood pressure, or a family history of heart disease or diabetes.

Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when you have three or more risk factors: high blood sugar, high triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and large waist circumference. This panel identifies the lab-based components of that picture.

Components

  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): Checks blood sugar, kidney function, liver enzymes, and electrolytes. Elevated fasting glucose is one of the defining criteria of metabolic syndrome.
  • Cholesterol and Lipid Panel: Measures the lipid profile, including the triglycerides and HDL that are central to metabolic risk assessment. High triglycerides with low HDL is a hallmark metabolic risk pattern.
  • Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c): Reflects longer-term blood sugar control. Even without a diabetes diagnosis, a rising A1c indicates worsening insulin resistance.
  • CRP: Chronic inflammation is both a feature and driver of metabolic syndrome. Elevated CRP — especially alongside abnormal lipids and blood sugar — significantly raises cardiovascular risk and helps guide treatment decisions.

Who is this test for?

This panel is most relevant for adults who are concerned about their cardiovascular and metabolic health, particularly those with a combination of risk factors such as excess abdominal weight, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, elevated blood sugar, or a family history of early heart disease. It is useful for establishing a baseline and identifying areas to address through lifestyle changes or medical care.
