Lab Test
Respiratory & Infectious DiseaseCOVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) PCR Test
About this test
This test uses PCR (polymerase chain reaction) to detect the genetic material of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, directly from a nasal swab. PCR is the gold-standard method for confirming an active COVID-19 infection — it is significantly more sensitive than rapid antigen tests, particularly during the early days of illness or in people who are asymptomatic.
A positive PCR result confirms that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is present at the time of testing. A negative result, combined with your symptoms and recent exposures, can help rule out COVID-19 as the cause of your illness. Results are typically available within 1–2 business days.
Components
- SARS-CoV-2 RNA (PCR): Detects the genetic material of the COVID-19 virus in your nasal secretions. Because PCR amplifies even small amounts of viral RNA, it can identify an infection earlier than antigen-based tests and is less likely to produce a false negative result.
Who is this test for?
This test is appropriate for anyone with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 — such as fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, or body aches — as well as for people who have had a known or suspected exposure to someone with COVID-19. It is also a reliable option when a rapid antigen test has returned a negative result but symptoms or exposure history suggest infection is still possible.
