Lab Test
General WellnessDiabetes Management Test
About this test
This panel is designed for people who are already diagnosed with diabetes and need regular monitoring of their blood sugar control and metabolic health. It tracks three key markers that together show how well your diabetes is currently managed and whether any related organ health concerns are developing.
Consistent monitoring is one of the most important parts of managing diabetes. Most clinicians recommend checking A1c every 3–6 months until blood sugar is stable, and at least every 6 months once controlled. Your fasting glucose and CMP results help catch changes in kidney and metabolic health before they progress.
Components
- Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c): The cornerstone of diabetes monitoring. Reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months. For most adults with diabetes, the treatment target is below 7%. Tracking A1c over time shows whether your management plan is working and when adjustments are needed.
- Fasting Glucose: Your blood sugar level at the time of the draw after fasting. While A1c shows the long-term picture, fasting glucose provides a current snapshot and can identify day-to-day fluctuations that A1c doesn't capture.
- Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): Diabetes can damage the kidneys (diabetic nephropathy) and affect the liver over time. The CMP checks kidney markers (BUN, creatinine, eGFR), electrolytes, and liver enzymes — all of which should be monitored regularly in people with diabetes.
Who is this test for?
This test is for people who have already been diagnosed with diabetes and need to track how well their blood sugar is controlled over time. The American Diabetes Association recommends A1c testing every three months for people whose diabetes is not well-controlled, and twice a year for those who are meeting their targets. It is often paired with a kidney and cholesterol check as part of a comprehensive diabetes management plan.
