Lab Test
General WellnessElectrolyte Test Panel
About this test
This panel measures five minerals — calcium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, and sodium — that regulate fluid balance, muscle function, nerve signals, and heart rhythm throughout your body. It's useful for anyone experiencing muscle cramps, weakness, irregular heartbeat, or fatigue, and for monitoring people taking medications that can affect electrolyte levels (such as diuretics, blood pressure drugs, or laxatives).
Electrolyte levels can shift quickly with changes in diet, hydration, kidney function, or certain medications. A single out-of-range value should be interpreted in the full clinical picture; your clinician may recommend repeat testing or additional workup depending on your symptoms and history.
Components
- Calcium: Involved in muscle contraction, nerve function, and bone structure. Tightly regulated by the parathyroid hormone and vitamin D.
- Chloride: Works with sodium to maintain fluid balance and helps the body regulate its acid-base (pH) balance. Chloride levels often move in parallel with sodium.
- Magnesium: Essential for hundreds of enzyme reactions, muscle relaxation, nerve function, and maintaining a normal heart rhythm. Low magnesium is common and often underdiagnosed.
- Potassium: The main electrolyte inside cells. Critical for heart muscle function and normal nerve-muscle signaling. Abnormal levels — either high or low — can cause dangerous heart rhythm changes.
- Sodium: The main electrolyte in the fluid surrounding your cells. Regulates overall body water content. Abnormal sodium is often related to dehydration, overhydration, or kidney and adrenal problems.
Who is this test for?
This panel is most useful for people who are monitoring a known condition that affects fluid balance — such as kidney disease, heart failure, or high blood pressure — or those taking medications like diuretics, ACE inhibitors, or laxatives that can alter electrolyte levels. It is also appropriate for athletes or active individuals with symptoms of dehydration, muscle cramps, or irregular heartbeat.
