About this test

This panel measures five hormones that shift significantly during the transition to menopause (perimenopause) and after, helping to clarify what's driving symptoms such as irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, sleep problems, vaginal dryness, or reduced sex drive.

Hormone testing during perimenopause can be challenging because levels fluctuate dramatically from day to day and cycle to cycle. A single snapshot can be informative, but results should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and cycle history by a clinician experienced in women's hormonal health.

Components

  • Estradiol (E2): The primary form of estrogen. Estradiol levels fall as ovarian function declines during perimenopause and reach very low levels after menopause. Low estradiol contributes to hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, bone loss, and mood changes.
  • Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Released by the pituitary to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs and estrogen. As the ovaries become less responsive during perimenopause, FSH rises significantly. A consistently elevated FSH (typically above 40 IU/L) alongside low estradiol and 12 months without a period is the clinical definition of menopause.
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Works alongside FSH to regulate the menstrual cycle. LH also rises during the menopausal transition and helps confirm the hormonal pattern of menopause.
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Thyroid dysfunction is common in midlife women and can cause symptoms very similar to perimenopause — fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, and sleep problems. Checking TSH ensures thyroid issues are not mistaken for or coexisting with hormonal changes.
  • Prolactin: Elevated prolactin can suppress estrogen and cause irregular or absent periods, mimicking perimenopausal changes. It's checked here to rule out a prolactin-related cause of hormonal disruption.

Who is this test for?

This panel is designed for women between approximately ages 40 and 55 who are experiencing symptoms that may indicate the onset of perimenopause — such as irregular periods, hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, sleep disruption, or brain fog. Hormone levels can fluctuate significantly during this transition, and testing at this stage can help confirm what is happening and inform conversations about management options.

This test is intended for female patients only.
