About this test

This panel checks four key health markers that are particularly important before becoming pregnant. It helps identify nutritional deficiencies, immune concerns, and hormonal or metabolic issues that are best addressed before conception for the healthiest possible pregnancy.

Ideally reviewed with your OB-GYN or primary care provider, these results can guide recommendations for supplements, lifestyle changes, or treatment before you start trying to conceive.

Components

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): Screens for anemia, which is very common in women and can worsen during pregnancy as blood volume expands. Identifying and treating anemia before pregnancy helps prevent complications.
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP): Assesses kidney and liver function, blood sugar, and electrolyte balance. Chronic conditions like diabetes or kidney disease carry specific pregnancy risks that are best managed from the start.
  • Folate (Folic Acid): The most critical nutrient for early fetal development. Adequate folate in the weeks before and after conception dramatically reduces the risk of neural tube defects (such as spina bifida). If your levels are low, your doctor will advise on supplementation.
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH): Thyroid function is essential for fetal brain development, particularly in the first trimester when the baby relies entirely on the mother's thyroid hormones. Untreated thyroid disease increases the risk of miscarriage and developmental problems. Identifying and treating thyroid issues before pregnancy significantly improves outcomes.

Who is this test for?

This panel is recommended for anyone who is planning to become pregnant in the near future. Major obstetric organizations suggest addressing nutritional gaps (especially folate, iron, and vitamin D), identifying any infectious disease risks, and confirming immunity status before conception. Running these tests before pregnancy allows time to correct any deficiencies or concerns.

This test is intended for female patients only.
