About this test

This test checks for two of the most common sexually transmitted bacterial infections — chlamydia and gonorrhea — using a highly accurate DNA-based method (PCR) that detects the bacteria's genetic material directly. Both infections are often completely symptom-free, which is why regular testing is recommended for sexually active people, especially those under 25, those with new or multiple partners, or those who don't consistently use condoms.

Both chlamydia and gonorrhea are fully curable with antibiotics when caught early. Left untreated, both can cause serious complications including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, epididymitis in men, and long-term fertility problems in both sexes. Testing and treating is straightforward and highly effective.

Components

  • Chlamydia trachomatis (PCR): Tests for genetic material from the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium. Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in the U.S. and is often called the silent infection because most infected people have no symptoms.
  • Neisseria gonorrhoeae (PCR): Tests for genetic material from the gonorrhea bacterium. Gonorrhea can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. This test uses a urine or swab sample and is more sensitive and convenient than traditional culture methods.

Who is this test for?

The CDC and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommend annual chlamydia and gonorrhea screening for all sexually active women under 25, and for older women with new or multiple sexual partners. Men who have sex with men should be screened at least annually. Both infections are often asymptomatic, so testing is the only reliable way to know your status. Testing is also recommended any time there has been potential exposure.
