Lab Test
Sexual HealthSTD Screening Test Panel — Expanded
About this test
This expanded panel screens for six sexually transmitted infections using a combination of PCR-based molecular testing, serological antibody testing, and a 4th-generation HIV combination test — all from a single visit. It is appropriate for people who want a comprehensive sexual health assessment, those with multiple or new partners, or anyone with symptoms that may suggest an STI.
By combining four PCR-detected infections with syphilis antibody testing and HIV antigen/antibody detection, this panel covers the broadest range of clinically significant STIs available through standard lab testing.
Components
- Chlamydia Trachomatis (PCR): Detects chlamydia at the DNA level. The most commonly reported bacterial STI in the US, chlamydia is frequently asymptomatic and can cause significant reproductive harm if untreated.
- Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (PCR): Detects gonorrhea by PCR. Gonorrhea can infect multiple sites and is often without symptoms, making routine screening essential for early detection and treatment.
- Trichomonas Vaginalis (PCR): Detects trichomoniasis, a parasitic infection and the most common non-viral STI globally. Many infected individuals — particularly men — have no symptoms, making PCR detection important as it is far more sensitive than older microscopy methods.
- Mycoplasma Genitalium (PCR): Detects a bacterial STI that is increasingly recognized as a cause of urethritis, cervicitis, and pelvic inflammatory disease. It is frequently missed because it requires PCR for accurate detection — standard culture methods cannot identify it.
- Syphilis: An antibody-based screen for Treponema pallidum, the bacterium that causes syphilis. Syphilis progresses through distinct stages and is curable with antibiotics when caught early. Left untreated, it can cause serious cardiovascular and neurological complications.
- HIV Combo (4th Generation): Detects both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies and the p24 antigen, allowing earlier detection of HIV infection than antibody-only tests — typically within 18–45 days of exposure.
Who is this test for?
This panel is well-suited for adults who want a thorough sexual health screen beyond the basics. It is particularly appropriate for people with multiple partners, those who have had unprotected sex with a new partner, individuals with prior STI diagnoses, or anyone who wants peace of mind from the most comprehensive standard STI screen available. No doctor's referral is required.
