About this test

This panel screens for three of the most common sexually transmitted infections — chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HIV — using highly sensitive DNA-based (PCR) testing for the bacterial infections and a 4th-generation combination test for HIV. It is an appropriate first-line screen for sexually active individuals, those with new or multiple partners, or anyone due for a routine sexual health check.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea frequently cause no symptoms but can lead to serious complications — including pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and chronic pelvic pain — if left untreated. Early detection and treatment clears both infections and prevents transmission.

Components

  • Chlamydia Trachomatis (PCR): Detects chlamydia at the DNA level using a urine or swab sample. PCR is significantly more sensitive than older culture methods and can detect infection even when bacterial counts are low. Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STI in the US, and most infected people have no symptoms.
  • Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (PCR): Detects gonorrhea using the same DNA-based method. Gonorrhea can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat, and is often asymptomatic — particularly in women. Untreated infection can cause serious reproductive complications and increases susceptibility to HIV.
  • HIV Combo (4th Generation): A combination test that detects both HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibodies and the p24 antigen. The antigen component allows detection earlier in infection (as soon as 18–45 days after exposure) compared to antibody-only tests, reducing the window period significantly.

Who is this test for?

This panel is appropriate for any sexually active adult who wants to screen for the most common STIs. It is particularly recommended for people with new or multiple partners, those who are not consistently using barrier protection, or anyone who has not been tested recently. Routine annual screening is recommended by the CDC for all sexually active women under 25 and for older women with risk factors.
